School Activities in Abidjan
Gobelé – Gobelé is a sprawling shantytown (estimate of over 4000
“dwellings,” mostly one or two rooms) situated in the middle of one of
the more affluent areas of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Our center of
activities in Gobelé is a building of 240mē called Noah’s Ark, which we
finished constructing in 2000.
At the start of 2007, our school had 184 students in kinder- garten to fifth grade. Our faculty, which consists of five teachers
and two aides, works very hard even with limited resources.
Biabou – In Biabou, which is a poor community on the outskirts of Abidjan,
our main activities focus on education. At the start of 2007, our sewing school for
job skills training had 38 students; our elementary classes, 100 children; our literacy
classes had 25 adults.
Our soccer team plays in
tournaments throughout Abidjan. The team, which has been one of the
best on the national level, helps keep kids off the street, builds
character, and teaches teamwork.
